Have you ever planned one thing and had it turn out totally different than what you originally planned? Yesterday, my intrepid husband Myron and I decided to see if we could check out an off-the-beaten-path Bed and Breakfast at Wolf Lodge. So armed with digital camera and good intentions, we wound our way around Wolf Lodge Creek Road only to find that the only living souls around the gorgeous building were a herd of work horses. Then I checked the phone number, and it was disconnected. I felt tremendous disappointment that my fantastic idea bombed, but Myron had plan B. We’d take a little day trip. All it cost was the gas and a hamburger when we were done (approximately $20 total). Read the rest of Day Trippin’ »
I peeked out the window at work and saw the sun setting around 4pm… winter was here. After I had completed my day at work, I walked to my car only to be greeted by wind gusts so piercing I thought I was about to summit the top of a mountain… again, winter was here. Although I do love the winter I knew it was now time to find indoor activities. I drove home and walked to my house as the rain poured down on me but I had a plan for tonight and I was not going to let some rain and wind get me down. The plan was “girls night in”. Are you ever thankful that Benjamin Franklin’s choice of a Wild Turkey didn’t become our national bird? Today I can safely say, with tears and fervor that I am thankful that the Bald Eagle was chosen as the symbol of America. And Coeur d’Alene is one of the best places on earth to watch them. In winter (December) the eagles come to Lake Coeur d’Alene’s salmon runs; in the spring (April-August) they mate and nest. We have to be the luckiest people on earth, that we can see these magnificent creatures so close up.
Today Myron and I drove to Higgins Point off of Coeur d’Alene Lake Drive to see if we’d be able to catch one of the raptors on camera. This is the time of the salmon run, the time when fish come to spawn and die after giving birth to their eggs. Eagle’s favorite buffet!
Eagles can have wing spans from 5.5 feet to 8 feet in length. They can be around 30-36 inches in height, which makes them unmistakable in North Idaho, even if they are anywhere near one of those giant ravens we also have in this area. We walked along the bay, beside some road construction, and assumed that all the people and equipment would deter the birds from hanging out with us. Something to remember: eagles that are hungry and find free food don’t give a rip about people. Read the rest of Wild Idaho - Eagle watching in Coeur d’Alene Idaho »

Coeur d Alene rooftops will soon be blanketed with snow, and ricocheting the sun’s rays to the snowflake encrusted sidewalks, and bounce back again to dance upon the icy lake. The spirit of Christmas has officially been welcomed into our small town bringing the spirit of non-stop shopping with it. This time of year can get extremely hectic, and yet, it is still such an elegant time of the seasons. Imagine a relaxing, authentic carriage ride around the streets of downtown Coeur d’ Alene; a chance to admire the beauty of Christmas and enjoy the company of family, friends, or your sweetheart.
Luckily, the owner of Percival Carriages, and horse carriage-driver is my father-in-law, and I had a chance to take a peaceful carriage ride out in Wolf Lodge. It was literally soothing enough to put a four month old to sleep. Apparently, the locals and tourists have had enjoyed the rides as much as I have, because I hear some days the lines can get rather long.
Spokane Teacher’s Credit Union co-sponsored with the Coeur d’Alene Downtown Association are offering another year of free holiday carriage rides. A perfect excuse to celebrate the days of relaxation. This year the rides are offered from November 22 through December 21. The carriage departs from First Street and Sherman Avenue from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays only.

Economic disaster, international upheaval, murders, drugs, earthquakes, tornadoes, floods, hurricanes, good grief it’s a mess out there! So how should we cope with all that on a daily basis? Grab a friend or two and go do something fun. On a budget or at payday, of course.
Our most recent excursion involved an invitation from our dear friends Tex and Nic Gaynos. These two have lived through most of the history of the 20th century, so they know how to take a break from the stuff that drags us down. We met them at “Fleur de Sel”, a local French Restaurant. Didn’t even know we had one of those did ya?
Me neither. Read the rest of French Fun in Kootenai County »
The holidays are coming. Thanksgiving and Christmas decorations are hung from nearly every home with care, and the streets of downtown are transforming into a winter wonderland. Such a dazzling time of year. Before the locals know it our famous boardwalk will be lit up with waving Santas and jolly snowmen, and Coeur d’Alene will be celebrating it’s annual Resort Holiday Light Show. Last year, it was a proud moment of Coeur d’ Alene’s to receive an acknowledgement from Good Morning America to be one of the best light shows in the nation.
Friends and I joke that people come out of the hills to attend this, and the annural Car Show in July. Parking is nearly impossible. However, if I find a spot my first venture is off to the boardwalk. It’s nearly ¾ of a mile long, afloat, and sparkling with all sorts of holiday decorations. I love taking in all the beauty of the Christmas lights, yet I also find myself noticing the beauty of families spending time together. It was time for the yearly rivalry of the University of Idaho Vandals and the Boise State Broncos. My friend, a somewhat prideful Boise State fan decided that we would all head down to Moscow to watch the game this year. We had planned in years past to go, but had never taken the effort to make it happen. This year I made sure we were going since I knew it was going to be a lot of fun.
I was put in charge of getting the tickets which I had quite a hard time acquiring them and honestly I almost gave up. I first went to ticketswest.com to order them. Unfortunately they only offered ticket packages for 3 or more games. Since there was only one home game left this season this was not a logical option for us. I then called the ticket office at UofI and did not find much luck there either. As I tried to place an order for the tickets I was informed that they did not sell tickets to the public. Students were given priority for the tickets. The women helping me suggested that I ask a student attending UofI for their ticket if they were not using it. Since it had been a few years since I was in college, and had not even attended that college, the likelihood of me finding someone to part with their ticket was going to be slim to none. I was disappointed and told my story of woe to my friend at work, a UofI alum. She suggested calling Boise State to see if they had tickets for the game. Her suggestion turned out to be genius as with a simple phone call to Boise I got our tickets to the game. Read the rest of University of Idaho Vandals Football - Moscow Idaho »
