Fernan Lake Canoeing and Fishing

Fernan Lake, Coeur d'Alene IdahoAs you can probably tell, my family loves the outdoors. It’s one of the main reasons that we live here in Coeur d’Alene Idaho. There is so much to do. Not only do you have Lake Coeur d’Alene, but you also have three or four other incredible bodies of water nearby to enjoy.

Lake Fernan is sort of Lake Coeur d’Alene’s calmer, more relaxed sister. You’ll find a few power boats on this lake, but the activity is never as crazy as it is on Lake Coeur d’alene. It is pretty easy to get too. If you are downtown near the resort, you just point your car north on Sherman and out of town. You’ll go all the way past the I-90 on ramp and take your first right after the Ranger Station (which is on your right). At the next intersection you’ll be able to see the boat launch.

Fernan has really nice facilities. The boat launch is more than sufficient and the dock has an awesome place for you and your family to fish. I’ve been told that the lake has some good bass fishing, and a friend of mine pulled in four small mouths while we were canoing on the lake. The lake is very picturesque and is surrounded by mountains on all sides. The dock has tables near the fishing section where you can clean your catch and prepare it for the ride home.

Loading and unloading our canoe was easy. We didn’t use the launch, we opted for the psuedo beach on the left side of the launch. The water is calm enough for an extended paddle. There are also some picnic facilities, although not a lot, and an outhouse on site. It isn’t like your bathroom at home, but it isn’t a tree either. There weren’t a whole lot of bugs while we were out. There is a path that you can walk around that is ok for a stroller and takes about 5 minutes to walk around. There is also plenty of shade for you to relax in while others boat, fish or take a hike around the lake. Expect to see lots of wildlife from Swans, to ducks and other waterfowl.
